No-exam life insurance

Who qualifies for no-exam underwriting, how it works, and the options when one is still needed.

Many insurers now offer accelerated underwriting: for applicants in defined age and amount brackets, underwriting happens using application data, pharmacy records, motor vehicle reports, and other available information instead of a medical exam. Approvals can be issued the same day. Each quote shows whether an exam is required, conditional, or not needed.

What it changes

Skipping the exam does not skip underwriting. Claims on a policy issued with false information can be denied in the first two years. If underwriting flags questions, the carrier may still request tests; you decide whether to move forward.

Who tends to qualify

Typically, applicants below age 60 seeking amounts under the carrier's accelerated limit, without major health events, and no tobacco use in the past year. If recent bloodwork from a doctor visit exists, some carriers will use that instead of requiring a new exam.

When an exam is required, expect a 20- to 30-minute session with a paramedical professional visiting your Belmont home or workplace at no charge. For healthy individuals, the results frequently improve your rate class, so the process can actually work in your favor.
